Does anyone know of a solution for a home screen that would have weather, news, rss feeds, etc. Something like an old fashioned web portal i.e. igoogle.com
I am new-ish to xbmc and loving it!

You might be able to install it in aTV 1 if you can get python installed on it (I believe it's been done before). Otherwise you can run it locally or on a separate computer and switch between your XBMC instances very easily. I use it on my Xubuntu server box and point it to my AppleTV v1 with XBMC installed on it as well as another linux computer with XBMC and a third one with OpenELEC.
