Is it possible to use Tomato USB router for NAS + MySql
#1
Just as the subject reads, I am wondering if it is possible / has anyone been successful in running both a NAS and MySql server (Optware?) from a Tomato USB enabled router. I was wondering what kind of experience one would expect with a set up like this. The reason I am asking is my brother is interested in having a set up similar to mine without the extra server running. This is first thought to come to my mind. Please feel free to comment with thoughts or even tutorials. If it could work, this can be a nice inexpensive and easy solution if we get the steps right Smile Thanks everyone for looking.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. A lot of people have similar set ups, where their router is doing both NAS and MySQL duties.

An decent router has somwhere between 200/400 mhz processor and somwhere around 32 / 256 mb ram.
I just dont see how the already limited hardware should also be able to run both nas and sql where both of these functions can be realy cpu and i/o intensive.

Get an nas device from qnap or synology instead. Small low powerd nas with bultin sql server and minimum maintance. Check qnap ts119p 2 or synology ds112+

Thanks for the feedback. Alex the limited specs were a concern as I was posting, I was honestly hoping for someone to reply "yes I tried it and this is what happened" I'll give it a few days waiting for replys and then maybe give it the old college try myself.

Depends on the router. Asus makes a lot of very powerful routers that are fairly priced (under $50, often) that have more than enough ponies to handle such tasks. For example, the Asus RT-N16

The router in question is actually the Belkin F7D7301 running a 480 MHz Broadcom BCM4718 Chip with 64MB RAM. The CPU appears to be comparable to the Asus you mentioned, but the ram appears to be halfed.
