A Few Random Questions - Help Please
#1
Hi All

Just have a few random questions:

1. Is there anyway to assign "genres" to movies in XBMC? When I search via Genres its just really random, for example some of my daughters Barbie movies show up in Action (I think one even shows up in Horror lol), and LOTR show up as Sci-Fi lol.

It just that I have so many movies now that I kinda need to split them up a bit, if the genres feature worked better I would just do that, but at the moment its so random.

2. When I go into Movies and it lists all my movies in showcase mode (which I have set up) it works mint, all the posters are shown perfectly etc. However when I go into TV Shows which also is in showcase mode, it takes like 2 or 3 seconds for the posters of each show to load and display, now I know this isn't really a big deal its just odd, since I have about 20 times as many movies as I have TV shows. Is there something I'm doing wrong that's causing this?

3. I have set it up that when on the homescreen and on a certain menu button (be in music, movies, tv shows etc) it shows random fan art backgrounds from those items. So when on Music is will show random fan art backgrounds of my music collection, same goes for movies. However I have noticed recently that often it is just a plain black background that shows, almost like it thinks its a proper fanart background. Is there anyway to fix this?

I think number 3 only started happening when I moved all my files over to my new hard drive. I removed the sources in XBMC, then cleaned the library, then moved the files, then reset up the sources from their new place on the new hard drive. I got the feeling though that the fanart background stuff etc wasn't cleaned from the library before I moved?

Thanks heaps in advance, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Not sure about 2 and 3, but you can use Add-on:XWMM (wiki) to edit genres.

Just to expand on what Ned said.. and yes XWMM is a good way to edit genre

1) Genre is labelled by the internet database you scrape and stored in the .nfo (to edit this, use XWMM, or manually edit the .nfo after you have exported to separate files and re-scraped locally the modified information back into the system. Don't blame XBMC for bad genre or multiple listing that don't seem to match the file. You might consider smart playlists... a much better way of slicing & dicing.

2) No sure why the posters don't show as quickly... but suspect it has to do with caching buffers etc. I don't have any issues this way... a good clue to what is going on... Set debug on, exit and re-start XBMC, go to your TV shows... then exit. Look at your debug-log, errors are easy to spot and what is taking time can be readily seen.

3) A lot of the eye candy is set into motion by the skin you're using. You set a path etc... and it cycles or uses static images as per your choice. There are some sneaky program add-ons that figure what music you're playing and get's some fanart.. Artist Slide show and CDart Manager. comes to mind.

I find that moving XBMC or moving auxiliary files by hand always creates more work that it's worth... Re-installing is best, not only do you get a second time at the choices of the installation, but it cleans everything up in the process while installing fresh new bytes. If you export to separate files, a rescrape is very quick..

Thanks for the info guys.

Regarding XWMM, I installed this but I have no idea how to use it? The only place I can find it is in Settings>Network under web interface, but if I enable it nothing happens or anything?

I have tried using smart playlists, like I tried to make a smart playlist with all my daughters movies which I placed in their own folder on my harddrive. But when made a smart playlist with the path to that folder, nothing came up so I don't know whats happening lol.

Ok I'll try the debug thing, though I won't have a clue what I'm looking for lol.

I was thinking of doing a full reinstall when moving the files, but it took me so damn long to get it setup this way before, I'd hate to have to do it all again lol.

You access XWMM through your internet browser... URL should be something like http://192.168.2.101/movies/index.html with your local IP and path.

The below finds Comic book movies... it save as .xsp file in C:\Users\Your_computers_name\AppData\Roaming\XBMC\userdata\playlists\video if you're using win/7

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
<smartplaylist type="movies">
<name>ComicBook</name>
<match>all</match>
<rule field="path" operator="contains">F:\Animation\Comic Book Movies\</rule>
</smartplaylist>

Shouldn't take more than and hour.

Make sure web interface is enabled and then jump on a web browser on the same network (or even the same computer) and go to:

http://YOUR.IP.GOES.HERE:8080/addons/

(I think the default port is 8080.. you should be able to see what it says for port in the network settings)

Then you should see all addons that have a web interface. You can also select a default web interface that will appear with out the "/addons/' portion of the url. Then click on XWMM.

I tried this, found a few errors that might be related, but I have no idea what they mean and how to fix etc. Would you guys like to take a look?

Thanks in advance.

Post a full debug log via pastebin.com and we'll get a fuller picture of what's going on.

Pastebin that's it, I knew there was a site for full logs I just honestly couldn't remember it. Lol

Cheers I'll post a full log tonight.

Ok sorry for the delay, here's a full log:

http://pastebin.com/FgRUw91n

Also this here is what it looks like, notice the blank posters to the right, these fill in properly in the following seconds. I know this isn't a major issue since it does work if you give it a second. But its just odd cause when I go into my movies they all appear instantly, and I have hundreds of movies, and only around 15 tv shows, So I would have thought if the computer had issues rendering the poster art it would have happened in the movies as well.

Anyway heres the screenshot:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe xbmc caches the posters for your movies in its thumbnails database
However for tv shows I dont think it caches the posters locally this is why you get a delay as it reads the poster from each directory on the fly
Bear in mind this is an observation and not a 100% guaranteed answer although it sounds likely
BTW do you have the option use poster.jpg switched on in viewtype options?
Try toggling this and see if it helps any (will only work well if you scraped tv shows to download posters NOT banner originally)
Check out my Fanart.tv stuff!
...........I also accept disc requests if image not on fanart.tv database !!!!

Ah that would explain I guess why the movies works flawlessly. Is there anyway to get XBMC to cache the TV Posters as well?

I think I have it toggled, but I probably did it after it already scraped the banners, cause I had it as banners but didn't like it so changed to posters.

Is there any fixes for this?
