Without a doubt the Apple remote beats them all for simplicty and ease of use. It is the only remote that will not confuse Grandma. Unfortunatrly the support on Linux has been spotty with issues for things like long keypress, Until now.....

Apple remote hardware
If running XBMCbuntu or any variety of linux on Mac hardware you are ready to move on to the next part. If not see how to get Apple hardware IR in your PC or ill-equipped Mac

Now once you have hardware support you need software support. The ONLY solution I have seen that gives a Mac OS like experience with the Apple Remote is ATVClient for Apple TV. Lirc is somewhat daunting and not great for long keypresses which is critical for the MacOS-Like experience. So go to here and learn how to mod the ATVClient for your Apple IR hardware, and install it.

Maybe someone more familiar with coding knows how to enter all of the the appropriate USB IDs in this file and create a .deb?
