Open Elec

I know it is possible to have Open Elec "only" on an AppleTV1. I've read on the Open Elec site that an ATV1 (silver) is possible but not after doing some surgery on it. What would be the benefits of having just that software alone over adding XBMC via the FireCore software on an ATV2? The only advantage I can think of is not having to worry about Apple software not needing to be updated, but then there wouldn't be anymore to update, right? I guess the other thing is not having to pay any money to Firecore essentially making it a free jailbreak entirely.

There is no OpenELEC for ATV2. ATV1 and ATV2 are two very different machines. Jailbreaking and installing XBMC is already free and doesn't require Firecore (just Seas0nPass, which is free). See the FAQs in the "READ ME FIRST" post at the top of the forum.
