OSX automatic sample frequency switching
#1
Hi,

I am very new to XBMC so please excuse what may appear to be a dumb question. I have searched the forum for an answer to this question but haven't found one, at least not in a language I understand, so once again, please excuse me if this has been answered.

XBMC isn't doing automatic frequency switching in my configuration (Frodo Nov 6th nightly, MacMini Mountain Lion, USB audio into a DAC). For example Audio Midi is setup showing 44.1k and I try to play a 24/192 audio file (Anita Baker, Rapture - ALAC). XBMC simply won't play until I manually switch Audio Midi to at least 96k, beyond that it plays.

Is this by design? My reason for evaluating XBMC is as a potential replacement for iTunes plus Amarra, which do automatic frequency switching. It will make switching to XBMC problematic were it not to provide this feature.

Am I missing something, do I have something wrongly configured?

Any thoughts/help welcome!

Thanks
Marc

Is this question (a) in the wrong place, (b) really stupid or © really difficult to answer?

I am betting (b) and I am not sensitive so could someone let me know? This is going to be quite important for the audiophile crowd on Macs, in fact it was one of the first things one of the cognoscenti at Computer Audiophile (not I, I hasten to add) picked up on.

I honestly have no idea how XBMC handles audio frequency stuff. One of our devs might know.

Thanks for the response. As you may have seen I tried to post the question on the development forum and got, shall we say, a chilly response!

My fault for cross-posting I guess.

Hey ho...

Any update on this or are we still "thinking about it"?

On further investigation and testing, it seems XBMC is simply overriding the OSX audio settings and whatever is set in Settings/System/Audio Output is the output device XBMC uses, irrespective of the Mac system settings and Audio Midi settings.

For example, if I go to System Preferences/Sound on my MacMini and select "Built-in Output" (optical) but then select "M2Tech HiFace" (USB) as the output in XBMC, XBMC plays through the USB output.

I am not saying this is wrong, clearly XBMC users want sound from the output they select in XBMC, but shouldn't XBMC be playing more nicely with the OSX Core Audio settings?

If I am missing something or just being stupid I will happily stand corrected.
