I have a few programs that are showing the audio codec as aac, which will play back the video but no audio. Is there a setting or a change I can make to xbmc to get these files to play the audio?

aac should play fine just like any other audio format. Have you checked 'aac capable receiver' under sound settings?

I do have aac capable selected in settings. I have one TV series which some episodes are ac3 codec which play fine, but about 6 episodes are aac codec and none of these episodes have sound, however they play fine in VLC media player. I looked in other TV series for shows with aac codec and found several and they play back fine with video and sound. So you are correct that aac files will play. I assumed it was the aac codec because that was the thing they all had in common. But it appears now the only thing they have in common is that they are all the same TV series.

Turn OFF that setting. Very few, if any receivers actually accept aac.
I'm rather tempted to remove the setting altogether.
