hey
i've just installed xbmcbuntu and after the pc restarts i get error: out of disk grub rescue> is there any way i can fix this please?

Considering the incredibly vague and low amount of information provided, I would have to point to

You probably have to follow the steps outlined there or try to
reinstall grub to /dev/sda "mbr" (presuming /dev/sda is your root hdd.)

well it a fresh install of xbmcbuntu 11 on a 160gb hard drive and its the only os on there

Follow the information on links please.
The grub probably didn't install properly or something else is going on, either way we need to remove the possibility of user error.

if this helps i inserted the live cd and pressed try ubuntu and it has stopped with a load of writing everything says ok exept starting load fallback graphics devices and says "unable to load LIRC kernel modules. verify your selected kernel modules in /etc/lirc/hardware.conf

That doesn't help, just raises more questions, It could be your hardware is not supported by that xbmcbuntu version?
Try to use this xbmcbuntu version
