Is there no solution to this problem? Is there no way to install xbmcbuntu 12.0 if you have a Radeon HD 4000 series card?

Well loading xbmcbuntu (which is based on ubuntu 12.10) will give you the wrong driver for abandoned cards like the Radeon HD 4000. Theoretically downgrading X and loading the fglrx-legacy driver should fix it, but many people find that it doesn't.

My solution would be to install 12.04 minimal and then install xbmc. That should drag in all dependencies. Make sure fglrx is installed.
