Which XBMC box?
#1
Hi

I need some help finding a descent XBMC device. I currently have a jailbroken Apple TV 2 which is great and want another couple of box's of equal spec.

I really dont need/want any android features at all - just a simple xbmc box. Looking around it would seem that a Linux build would be the best option which would boot straight to xbmc. I can see loads of android devices, but would any of these be able to run for example openelec?

Thanks

Pivos XIOS, flash it to Linux. The front led are damn bright and when running its warm but NO fan and no power use in standby. The remote is kind of crappy and I didn't play with trying to get an MCE working with it but I found the box to work VERY well as a simple appliance for videos.
Openelec Gotham, MCE remote(s), Intel i3 NUC, DVDs fed from unRAID cataloged by DVD Profiler. HD-DVD encoded with Handbrake to x.264. Yamaha receiver(s)

One thing to note is that the Rasberry Pi can't play MPEG2 because of some sort of licence issue, so that may affect your decision. You could also wait a couple weeks and see if the rumored ATV3 jailbreak get released.

Hi, just wondering if anyone had an further suggestions.

Basically I want a completely local system so no streaming, now is pivos actually go a decent enough processor to run a good skin like mq4 sc?

Now as I'd rather have something future proof and with h265 on the horizon do you think it'll be a push with these systems and so is it really better just to buy the new Mac mini??

The Pi plays H264 out-of-the-box, but you have to buy MPEG2 and VC-1 licenses for each Pi. This was done to keep the cost of the device low - so that only people who want MPEG2/VC-1 need to pay for it. Same reason that Microsoft now make Media Center an optional component in Windows 8.

None of the devices that use hardware VPU acceleration are likely to do H265 - they won't have the decoding 'burned in' to the VPU.

Either a fast CPU or a GPU that can do general calculation (CUDA etc.) is likely to be required for H265. (The built in hardware in graphics cards and integrated graphics systems on CPUs like Sandy/Ivy Bridge or the Ax-series or E-350/E-450 for accelerating H264/MPEG2/VC-1 is not going to support H265 - you're going to have to use general processing)

If you always wait for the 'next thing' you'll go mad. H265 and 4k support are probably too much to worry about at the moment.

Wow, that's expensive there. I bought mine for 89.00 at usawholesalesuppliers.com. Althought I don't see them available there anymore. They have come up with a new model G-box slav which is the same as the midnight, just with some additional connectivity features.

I have the g-box midnight and I loaded it up with the linux build which you can find on the forums at http://androidtvbox.us/

It runs quite good, it still does have it's glitches as it's still a working build right now. For the price I paid, I'd say I'm pretty satisified.

Your right... I didn't see that it was linux loaded into it.... But gosh... they want an extra 60% to load linux into the box. Just buy the regular android box and then download the linux build.
