I am moving my XBMC install to a new computer. Starting from scratch. Some recent diving into Ubuntu server has given me some confidence in getting XBMCbuntu working as well as my current windows setup. Most of what I want to be able to accomplish is using a remote. I cant find any good guides on setting them up. Theres soo much scatered info about it that maybe I am just missing a good guide. But,

What I need is my
MCE remote and receiver (MediaGate) to work with a few key remaps.
Power button to suspend and wake the system.
Receiver to turn on/off with the system (IR Blaster off the MCE receiver)
TV to turn on/off with the system (serial interface)
Future: IR commands when play/pause/stop actions are received from XBMC for light control.

and then feed the dog, make popcorn, get me a soda, adjust the heat/AC, lock the door... LOL couldent resist. although adjusting heat and AC could be a plus.

If anyone can give me some tips or pointers or send me to some guides I would be very greatful.

Thanks,
Joe

Lirc + irexec + ir-keytables + irsend will do most, if not all of what you want.

that actually all looks good tried to use irrecord but it tells me:
Code:
irrecord: could not get file information for /dev/lirc
irrecord: default_init(): No such file or directory
irrecord: could not init hardware (lircd running ? --> close it, check permissions)

Not sure how to stop lircd

Also how can I send serial commands?
