Sort of off-topic maybe but here goes ...
Virtually all of my TV these days comes from the internet although I do have a Sonicview 8000 HD satellite receiver that I turn on every now and then. It has a built-in PVR function and records to a USB drive. It just occurred to me that I could pick up a small / cheap NAS to record to via USB then set up something on my server to pull the files from a watch folder on the NAS via ethernet and dump into the appropriate TV show folder on my server. This would save me from having to stream later and I could probably work out a way to be able to stream it to multiple devices while it's being recorded. I could certainly watch it everywhere once the show's been recorded and scraped. Questions:
1. Is a small / cheap NAS the best way to do this? If so, recommendations? I've got room for another 18 TB on my server before I have to think outside the box so I don't need anything big here - even a cheap laptop drive would do since I only need temporary storage. I have a HTPC in the same cabinet as the satellite receiver but would rather not have to use it too when the server's always running.
2. I assume I'm re-inventing the wheel here - I'm an expert! If this isn't the best way to do this what do you recommend? Everything I have is Linux so windows-only stuff won't work. I'm also very unlikely to buy commercial software but don't mind making donations for open-source stuff.
thanks
