I recently got a hold of CHiPs tv show that was encoded in vp70 format. I did a search but didn't come up with much that I knew how to use. Is there and easy way to play these in XBMC or should I use a converter program such as Wondershare to convert if possible?

Found a free program called Format Factory. Converted one and it plays in VLC so all is good. Maybe this will help someone if they search vp70.
