[THX-UltraII]

Tried a few reinstallations of XBMC (official stable Frodo download) and Aeon MQ4 but in the Multiplex view I cannot get the fanart work (background stays blue/default; curtains work however).

What could I be doing wrong?

I haven't got that issue. What version of MQ4 are you using? What are your settings for that view so I can try and recreate?
