I just read the blogpost about the update popup. I think on OS X sparkle would be a better solution. It shouldn't be too hard to implement and works reliable and is a painless experience for users.
Find more info about sparkle here: http://sparkle.andymatuschak.org/
To give an idea what the sparkle process looks like here's some screenshots:
* This automatically pops up when a new version in the subscribed channel is available (be it stable, beta or nightly is depending on the settings the user makes): http://cl.ly/image/0d163T2F251W
* Hit "Install update": http://cl.ly/image/0u47113L160M
* Hit "Install and Relaunch" http://cl.ly/image/032L3s3T043c
* Done.
If an add-on solution does the same in less clicks, please go with that, otherwise dearest sirs and madams, please consider Sparkle an option despite being kind of an island solution (since it's only for OS X). I assure you, your OS X users would be pleased.
I can't code myself but have been involved several software projects changing to sparkle and all were very happy with the solution.
