I don't know if this is already being worked on because i can't seem to find any threads about it in this forum but what i would like to do is this:

Have specialized version/options to make XBMC act as a XBMC Server

All the media and databases would be stored on the central computer
XBMC clients would connect to the server using SAMBA protocols or something similar to retrieve thumbnails, artwork,profiles etc
Media Files would be shared over SAMBA or similar protocols

Possibly have profiles for each device that connects to customize content

make this all easy for the client to connect to in settings have an option that says XBMC Server = address of server

Then clients would connect to the XBMC Server and then in background let xbmc decide based on what its needs wether to use MySQL
or Samba or what ever to get that data

the Special Shares that XBMC Server would use are
XBMCData - The entire userdata structure then just let each client read from this

So when Server Mode is enabled the following re-map to

special://thumbnails - //home-server/XBMCData/thumbnails
special://videoplaylists - //home-server/XBMCData/playlists/video
special://musicplaylists - //home-server/XBMCData/playlists/music
etc...
