For some reason I cannot figure out how to open a existing music playlist from the Android app? Am I blind or is the function not there?

Well you can use Yatse or Music Pump to have more complete remotes that support playlists and much much more

About playlist there's a strange bug in currents Xbmc that register .m3u as pictures so may generate troubles.

A solution :

You just need to add the following in your advanced settings in Xbmc installation
<pictureextensions>
<remove>.m3u</remove>
</pictureextensions>

+1, i tried Yatse and it support music smart playlists

I didn't tried "Music Pump", does it have features that Yatse doesn't ?

Music Pump has a lot to offer, especially for music playback. You should definitively give it a try.

Appart from all standard features that most players have:
- You can download songs, albums, current queue
- Stream songs to your android device
- Use Music Pump as local music player and start streaming music to xbmc similar to airplay on apple devices
- Supports playlists and smart playlists
- Singles / Top 100 / recently added / recently played music ...
