It would be helpful to be able to distinguish long-running shows which are traditionally referred to by names rather than season numbers, without having to enter each one as a separate show.

Yes, this is an issue I found an answer to in Media Browser by having a custom edited series.xml file in each season folder. If XBMC would allow a tvseries.nfo in each season folder, this could be a good solution here as well.
