Ok I googled it for you. Gui power off button, choose exit, hit escape.

Ok. Run a dmsg tail before I plug in the drive, correct?

Run dmesg after plugging the drive in. The end of the output will tell you what the kernel saw and did.

Can't login via CLI because my @ sign which is part of the root password, is mapped as a ". I think it's time to reformat this thing??

Flashed OpenELEC, issue resolved. Obvious issue with Raspbmc and external drives. OpenELEC seems to be more stable and reliable from what I was reading today.
