I wanted to build a dedicated XBMC HTPC, so here is what I put together ...

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Operating System

nMEDIAPC Black Aluminum / Acrylic / Steel HTPC 1080P Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case (link)

ASUS F2A85-M PRO FM2 AMD A85X (Hudson D4) SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard (link)

AMD A10-6700 Richland 3.7GHz Socket FM2 65W Quad-Core Desktop Processor AMD Radeon HD AD6700OKHLBOX (link)

Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model KHX16C9T3K2/16X (link)

SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (link)

FSP Group FSP450-60GHS(85)-R 450W Micro ATX12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Intel Core i3/i5/i7 Compatible (link)

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6450 1GB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card ( 100322L) (link)

ASUS Black Blu-ray Drive SATA Model BC-12B1ST/BLK/B/AS (link)

2.4GHz Fly Air Mouse Wireless Qwerty Keyboard Remote for PC Android TV Box HTPC (link)

Four 2Tb Samsung internal harddrives (for media)

Loaded XBMC (Frodo) and everything loads fast and plays smooth. Big Grin

Three things pop out to me.

1) Why get a Richland APU with integrated AMD GPU and then drop in the weakest AMD dedicated GPU you can buy? The A10-6700 GPU is better.

2) Even though it comes with a SFX-to-ATX adapter, why get a microATX power supply when the case is designed for an ATX power supply? I have the nMediaPC 1000b and there is plenty of room for a ATX PSU.

3) 16GB is overkill for a HTPC. 4-8GB is plenty, 4GB for HTPC duties, 8GB if you plan to play games as well.

Unless there is a compelling reason, I would drop the HD6450, put in a ATX PSU (I have the PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk III Series 400W Modular Power Supply in mine) and go with 8GB to start.

Great suggestion!

I'll remove the SAPPHIRE PCIe card and use the onboard HDMI (A10-6700).

I was worried about space and cable management, but I'll upgrade to a ATX power supply. Maybe more wattage (500w)

Since DDR3 ram was cheap, thought it would be good to add more. Don't plan to play games on this.

Thanks, Dougie.

Without the GPU (though even with for that one), you could actually downsize to a 300W PSU. The microATX will give you more room though a modular ATX PSU would be ideal. If you like the microATX PSU, check out this one: http://www.amazon.com/FSP-Certified-300-...B004VF4R4U. I have this in my server and it's great. I've built a few servers now with this PSU. 300W is still 2x what your system will ever use.
