You forgot to mention, that XBMC needs vcredist_2008_SP1. It was not very easy to find why the heck the program was not starting.

The installer installs vcredist for you...

It doesn't for me. I had to google around a lot to find out what was wrong.

Is it possible that it installs vcredist but not SP1?

Dunno actually, you'd have to check that one. But I'd guess that it either installs SP1 or you don't actually need SP1. Otherwise we'd have seen a lot more complaints about this.
