Need advice on a htpc
#1
Hi, I Need advice on a htpc I am doing for my friend, he wants the least expensive possible, he will be running xbmc exclusively on it:
Here's the setup:
Gigabyte GA-C1007UN-D Intel Celeron 1007U Intel NM70 Mini ITX 85.26 cad $
Apex MI-100BK mITX Case $ cad 45.67
memory: Corsair XMS3 TW3X2G1333C9A 2GB 30.37$ cad
drive: Crucial V4 64 gb refurbished at 39.99$ cad , question: would an 8 or 16 gb usb3 flash drive running openelec be a viable and reliable option for the long run?
wireless adapter TP-Link TL-WN851ND 22.48$ cad
Any advice, recommendation comment are highly welcomed
Thanks

I see with your configuration the total cost is around $230. Not sure if it is available in canada, but for few more dollars(~$30 depending on the deal) you could buy a lenovo q190 in the US and with that you would get the following additional things:

* Windows 8
* 500GB hard disk
* 2GB more RAM
* 30 day free return

I was looking at the intel nuc:

however it needs msata and so-dim memory on top and those do not look cheap
last possibility is this one:

still going back and forth

Do not bother with that wireless adapter unless your friend only watches ~500mb DivX movies.

Refurbished SSD?

I agree with christer. Try to run a cable if you can.

I used a USB drive with Openelec for a long time. Just want to stay away from heavy fanart skins and it will be ok. Otherwise any sized SSD will work.

@Christer:
Thank you for your input, I based my choice on Assassin recommendation for however a usb option and it is 150 mbs:TP-WN722N, so I figured why not go for a 300mbps option and use the pci slot and hide the adapter, but thanks for your insight this will save me future phone calls from my friend, any recommendation you might give me?
@cwide:
I appreciate your input, I think going with a reliable usb and openelec would be a better option ( than a refurbished ssd as Christer pointed out) and less expensive too, which one did you use, does it matter if it is usb2 or usb3?
Thanks

If you have a system that can boot from USB3 then that will obviously be better for loading art... otherwise I doubt you will notice much of a difference.

I just used a cheap USB2 drive. It served me well. I think a lot of people use the 4 or 8 GB version of these: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-Fla...andisk+usb
