i try to build a network mp3 player with the features below:
- short boot time
- just for mp3 playback (no video)
- mp3 files are located on a windows share (server)
- automatic start of random play after boot (no keyboard and display required, no manual interaction required to start playing)
it has to run on a pentiuim 3 notebook.
questions:
- is xbmc a good solution to build such a network player?
- does xbmc allow to be configured according to the requirements above?
- what os is the best for the requirements above?
thanx for your help!

windows will certainly be a no go so i'd indeed recommend linux (openelec).
not sure if the videocard is supported though

i tried to install openelec, but unfortunately, my notebook does not allow to boot from usb stick.
is it possible to burn a cd instead, and how do i have to do this that it will be a bootable openelec cd?
thanx!

xbmc is overkill isn't it? He doesn't need a gui. Something like a minimal linux running mpd would surely work?

XBMC is probably not the best choice for such old hardware. You could use a PLOP boot CD to boot from USB, or do a manual install of OE.

Yes of course the other potential problem is whether the P3 machine will have a graphics card that works with XBMC.

i tried using plop to boot from usb.
then it starts reading from usb, and i get the text below on the screen:

and so on
what does this mean?
does openelec not run on my ibm t21 notebook or am i doing something wrong?
thanx!

i think so, but i'm not sure.
i load the plop boot manager and select usb, then the usb stick starts blinking and i get the screen messages mentioned.
do you mean that it does not really boot from usb and this is why it crashes?
so what can i do?

but is it the plop or the openelec that crashes?
if it's openelec, is there an older version that works on this notebook?
