USB to HDMI adaptors
#1
Hello. I have an old laptop here that i would like to install XBMCbntu on and turn into a media box. The only problem i can see is that it has no HDMI port, only VGA.
Can i simply add a USB to HDMI adaptor and get full 1080P with support for all of the various surround sound tracks etc?

The specs are...

Intel Pentium ® M 1.73 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6600
1GB RAM

Would this be a suitable machine for the job? I ran it "live" from a USB stick and it's very smooth, however, Blu Ray playback wasn't smooth at all. Is this because I'm running the OS "live" or because the hardware isn't supported/fully accelerated?

Any input is appreciated!

Chris.

Don't think USB->HDMI adaptors are good for video playback - the USB 2.0 interface isn't fast enough to carry full bandwith HD video uncompressed.

Getting blueray from a 1.7GHz Pentium M might be problematic - even on the internal video card (which you've already discovered).

You'll never get enough bandwidth on a USB to HDMI converter to do decent video of any sort. USB video adapters are made for things like powerpoint presentations, not viewing video.
