New to XMBCbuntu, any tips or advice?
#1
Hi all,

I am installing XMBCbuntu onto some old hardware. My old HTPC to be precise. Currently downloading and re-ripping 12.2 Intel-Amd Iso as my 1st attempt kept giving me an error during install. Something to do with drive, HDD, disc. drive and HDD change made no difference.

I am wondering if the OS I chose is correct for my hardware,

Asus Maximus II Gene MicroATX motherboard.
Intel E8500 LGA775 CPU.
Stock Intel cooler.
Corsair Dominator GT 2x2GB memory.
Powercolor HD5750 passive cooled GPU.
Samsung 840 Evo SSD 120GB.
Corsair HX450w modular PSU.
Samsung Blu-ray drive.
Silverstone GD02B case.

I used to use this with Windows 7 and MyMovies. My films are on the upstairs PC on TS folders and I plan to stream my music and movies from that upstairs Windows 7 PC. Using an android phone or tablet as a remote.
I do not want to use a keyboard, mouse or computer monitor, just connect HDMI up to a 1080p TV or projector and interface with the android device.

Any tips or advice would be welcome.

Edit,
No joy, regardless of HDD or SSD, regardless of optic drive, I keep getting the same error when trying to install XBMCbuntu.

The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disc.

Error 5 input/output error.

The drives and hardware all work, I have no issues installing Ubuntu to type this, or using a live CD. Up until recently the machine was happily running Windows 7 64bit.

First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

I am not quite sure what your link is referring or inferring? Are you claiming XBMCbuntu 12.2 does not install due to the graphics card?

Are you saying I have to download a Mini Iso? Then copy paste a load of commands? You can't just download a version of XBMCbuntu and have it running? I have no interest in an operating system, just a good media player.

Will this old hardware not play my movies and music via XBMC without a load of flapping around?

Hardware looks good apart from AMD GPU - theyre not the best choice for linux, although it does look like its improving. Try openelec if xbmcbuntu doesnt work.

I think he is suggesting you install ubuntu mini and follow that guide rather than install xbmcbuntu - for a optimal and best working system.

Basically I wanted to make a long story short. The OP should have read the intro of the page I linked. There is no support for your graphics card in xbmcbuntu, in the sense of: it won't do hardware acceleration at all ...

OpenELEC was a good tipp. That will work out of the box.

Evety computer needs an operating system. Xbmc is not an operating system.

Try openelec. It is a specialised linux distro for running xbmc.

Your hardware has been thrown on the scrapheap by AMD. Shame on them.

Is support for 5 series AMD dropped ? I have a 6 series working fine in xbmcbuntu.

If you find "no hw acceleration" support, then yes - it will still work.
