Linux New Hardware for XBMCBuntu

Question
Hi,

my current htpc build (old zotac with atom and ion1 or ion2) started to struggle with some x264 + 1080p SBS coded material. The material plays fine in XBMC on my Windows PC so I'd guess the old VPU is lacking some capabilities and the CPU is lacking power to do it.

I'd like to upgrade - not overspecc but somewhat future proof.
I tried to add a Zotac GTX640 Zone Edition (Revised Model with Kepler GPU) but I had no luck. I finally got video to work by installing latest NVIDIA drivers but I wasn't able to get audio to work and finally stopped trying.

So would someone be so kind to advise on the latest hardware beeing supported by the current XBMCBuntu without too many problems ?
Looking for a reliable but cheap MoBo + CPU + GPU if needed.
The CPU does not need to be that powerful - more important would be a hint which HD Graphics I'd need...

I'd be fine with Sandy, Ivy or Haswell. I'd be ok with Intel HD or extra NVidia.I'm anti AMD biased... Sorry...
