So I changed distros... for nothing?

I actually went as far to switch to Ubuntu since there's no official support for fedora -- and I followed this guide to the letter in section 1.1
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW...Step_Guide

Frodo is available from Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) to 13.04 (Raring Ringtail), you can install from the team-xbmc PPA as follows or replace the ppa with the desired from above.

I just installed Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS

Why, was I then presented with an outdated and no longer supported version of Eden from your official repositories?

Strange, looking here https://launchpad.net/~team-xbmc/+archive/ppa it shows XBMC 12.2 for Precise, are you sure you added the right repo?
If I have been of help, please add to my reputation as a way of saying thanks, it's free.

apt-cache policy xbmc

will tell you where your xbmc came from. You might not have installed the ppa properly.
