Probably would be helpful for folks to know which Windows version and what system hardware you're planning on using. Also, are you planning to use the remote just for controlling the HTPC or for other equipment (TV, receiver/amp, etc.) as well? If the latter, what are the makes/models of the other gear?

That's also known as the VRC-1100 (wiki). I have two of them and they work great for controlling XBMC (in my case, under Linux).

If your pc has not internal IR or CIR bracket you wont be able to turn it on with a remote..

All other functions will work though...

Well if you are lucky and your MB has a CIR pin (almost all Asrock boards has it) then you can get an IR head from http://shop.inteset.com/remotes-receivers they are pretty cheep and you will be able to turn your HTPC off and on from complete shutdown. then you just need a RC 6 compliant remote, there are lots to choose from. As long as the IR receiver is recognized as a Microsoft e-Home product by the driver then it works.

That model looks just like my Hama MCE Remote Control. I have limited experience with these but it is working OK in XBMC and Win7 64bit.

I found an IR receiver and remote that will allow you to turn your system on from a complete shutdown. I have a few for sale on ebay. (is it ok to post this here?)

I have one installed and it works a treat.
