My thoughts on OUYA + XBMC

And about the OUYA not having a conventional remote control,
come on guys, at $99, jeez, just buy one like the MELE F10 PRO or
the soon to be QUBI REMOTE....

I had to buy a remote for my windows HTPC,
and my htpc costed wayyy more then the OUYA,
so just give it a break guys Wink

Once again, NO IR remote compatibility NO deal for HTPC
If there was reasonably priced external IR receiver or better yet IR on board
that would seal the deal for many people I know.
BTW, not thrilled about the fan in it neither....

For you, not for me

I bought OUYA a month ago and have been using it a bit.
It is for sure a matter of taste/preference, but i don't like it that much as far as using it for XBMC goes.
Sure, it probabaly is the best Android device for XBMC, but it still has long ways to go before it will be good enough.
I bought it because i got an offer i couldnt refuse and i did not have any expectations, so i can't say that i'm disappointed, but i wouldn't buy it for mainly XBMC use at this point, mostly because my similarily priced Gigabyte Celeron 1007U board+RAM+Flash drive combo is so much better, that it's not even funny. (Of course i had PicoPSU already and i'm using DIY case, so if you add those, price would be almost twice as much as OUYA).
Also the fan is incredibly loud. Thankfully it doesnt run all the time, but when it does, it's very annoying. Has anyone run OUYA with fan disconnected for XBMC use? I wonder how are temps in such case....

Anyway, IMO it s an interesting toy with great potential, probably good enough for secondary player, but not yet ready to be used as main XBMC machine...

Hi Guys,
Can someone recommend a guide for installing XBMC on it? I need a starting point please...

Thanks,

Hernando

Pretty weird IMO that it only consumes up to 4.5 watts but still requires a loud fan.

Can anyone confirm whether the Ouya supports 1080 MPEG2 for Live TV streaming? So far I haven't been able to make this work on my Android devices and I'm pretty sure it's just not supported by libstagefright or medacodec.

So my ouya arrived today. I was disappointed to find out that the build in the ouya store does not support AAC due to some licensing problem, that's a huge letdown and renders it completely useless.

hernandito: grab the latest nightly build from here: http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/android/arm/
Follow the instructions here to install it: http://mymediaexperience.com/xbmc-on-and...ased-ouya/

I'm busy scanning my library on the latest nightly. So far video playback is extremely quick even over an https network share. I'm very curious to see how performance holds up once the complete library is loaded and how stable it is with extended periods of uptime. Initial impressions of the xbmc gui and video playback place the performance of ouya lightyears ahead of the pivos or atv.

*edit*

The xbmc nightly build crashed to the ouya "desktop" while scanning my library as I was writing this reply. I'm really looking forward to a stable release for this platform with complete functionality.

It worked when I played 1080 live TV mpeg2 back in February. The Tegra 3 inside should be able to handle that with CPU/software decoding easily (mpeg2 is a little easier for CPUs).

I'm using alpha 9 and look on Google how to side load apps on the ouya.

I have been messing around with XBMC on ouya for a few months now and I have to say I am pretty hopeful that it will turn out to be a great device for running XBMC. I love how you can run native Android apps such as Netflix, Hulu, watch ESPN, and not have to use some of the hack add ons created specifically for XBMC. With the rich ecosystem of Android apps, this device and operating system seems to be the perfect platform for running XBMC. There are a few quirks, but no deal breakers for me yet. I too I'm running the f10 mele remote, and I'm very pleased with it overall. Like the OP said I spent over $500 building out my windows HTPC for running XBMC, and it isn't that much better then this $99 device. Sure I don't have Blu ray playback and game emulation is still involving, but for simply watching TV shows, movies, Netflix, etc., this device is more than capable.

Retro game console emulation works quite well on the ouya...there's retroarch multiplatform emulator and a bunch of others available in the discover store

I installed official XBMC for OUYA v12.3.2 on my friend's OUYA
you can grab it directly from OUYA repository --> http://dlyv5j2269q7v.cloudfront.net/apps...12.3.2.apk

I didn't install the lastest version from OUYA Discover menu, which is v12.3.3,
because like we all know, they had licensing issues and we forced to
drop some audio playback capabilities of formats such as DTS and AC3 for now till they resolve this.

But in v12.3.2, the one just before, still included DTS and AC3 playback Wink
and i still asked my friend today, and he said XBMC never crashed on him,
so its a really stable version of XBMC for OUYA, so i suggest you side load v12.3.2....

to side load it to your OUYA, just check tutorials on Youtube, there's plenty, its really easy!

and if u want XBMC to autoboot automatically when you powerON your OUYA,
just go to OUYA's discover menu,
and do a search for this app and install it --> AUTOPiLOT

if v12.3.2 isn't working great for you for some reason,
i suggest you use koying's SMPC v12.4.0 then http://filez.semperpax.com/5e9jhnh
basically, SPMC is XBMC for OUYA with DTS and AC3 included + Multi Channel PCM for AVR users....
it also fixes other stuff that i dont know about sorry...
you can always try both versions and see which one you like best.

to everyone

For those complaining about the Loud Fan OUYA has,
i hope you all know you can swap it for another one,
OUYA is meant to be hacked / opened up Wink

I saw one YouTube video recommend the Noctua NF-A4x10 fan for this. It's hard to say from a video how much difference it makes, since the mic might have auto-gain, but it seems like it made a difference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rra0FwlHvBA

Flirc infrared reciever adapter should work with most universal remotes like Logitech's Harmony series, but does it work with Android?

http://flirc.tv

Flirc is recommend for XBMC for other platforms, but again not sure about Flirc compatibility with Android and XBMC on Ouya?
