Doesn't sound like there is a solution close at hand. Goes to show you that if you have software you like, and want to help keep it alive, your support can be critical, and this doesn't necessarily mean cash (but this is the most helpful) it may mean just a bit of your time. Why not dig a bit deeper and see what issues the author had, and see if there is a way you might contribute or some effort to improve Opensubtitles.

For English subtitles Opensubtitles is very good, but bierdopje did provide a lot of very good dutch subtitles. Although I do understand English very well, I prefer dutch for some tv series.

The owner of the site has received legal threats from a group called BREIN.
That group is standing up for copyrights and they say self translated subtitles are copyrighted and they got a threat about getting into a civil law suit.
The site owner doesn't have the time and/or money to follow up in a law suit.

I think I hate BREIN now. Never heard of them before reading this, but pretty sure I really hate them.

Yeah now someone will set up an anonymously owned site housed in some obscure country and start again.
