Official Nanoxia aswer... Regaring HDD capacity of Nanoxia DS 6

Dear ,,,,
thanks for your interest in our products.

In the moment, you can mount in the Nanoxia Deep Silence 6 case up to 15
x 3,5/2,5" drives without any modifications.
We did not have further HDD cages for the Deep Silence 6 in the moment,
so you can not mount more HDDs.

In the Nanoxia Deep Silence 5 case, you can mount 12 x 3,5/2,5" drives
without any modifications. But here you can buy further HDD cages for up
to 17 maybe 18 3,5/2,5 drives.
But than you have very low space for
other components.

....................

This Motherboard has 22 SATA slots...

but for $550....

HOLY $H1T, now thats a MB.

Can't wait till that tech trickles down to more normal MBs, it'd be great to start seeing $100 - $200 MBs with that many available sata slots.

Kinda surprised it doesn't just use a sas port and employ a breakout cable, but understand why its $550 !

Motherboard is really great... expensive... but great...
(really dont like those sas cables .... too thick... now normal black rounded sata cables can do)

the problem is to find a good case to house it and take advantage of all? 22 sata slots Smile

since i am a big fan of fractal design..

I also checked the
Fractal Design Define XL R2

i see that it has 8 hard drive bays

maybe use this
http://www.icydock.com/goods.php?id=48
for 5 more hard drives,

and i am thinking if i can attach additional hard drive cages
http://www.fractal-design-shop.de/index.php?a=323 (for 4 more hard drives)
and
http://www.fractal-design-shop.de/index.php?a=388 (for 4 more hard drives)

Total 8+5+4+4=21 hard drives...
(with the Asrock Motherboard with the 22 Sata slots)

I asked Fractal if this is a viable build...
They responded:
"The lower HDD cage will fit, but I haven't tested an additional lower HDD cage in combination with the top HDD cage in a case with the motherboad installed, so I can't say for sure.
Otherwise this looks like a doable solution."

Hmmmm.... Cool

I don't think you are gonna get that MB in that case with two additional cages.

But its getting close!

Why not just use a rackmount case with that MB, at least you don't need any more cards (or get a bunch of PCI-E cards and have 40 hdds!!!)

Are you referring to Norco 4020?

Researching a bit i found out the "ultra small"

Lian Li D8000
Image

that can hold 25 drives at least.... 20 + 5 (converting the 3 5 1/4 -> 3 1/2)

i m thinking now of buying 3x ibm 1015 (3x8 sata drives = 24 hard drives),
So i need 3 X PCIx2

any suggestions on motherboard and CPU?

Maybe it would be easier if you told us what exactly your goals are, how do you plan on achieving them and the total budget for the project.

Purpose is to build server that can hold at least 24 hard drives in order to stream bluray content music etc on 2 xbmc machines and a popcorn hour..
It will run under windows 7, no experience with unraid.

I am really close on choosing the lian li d8000, because this server is going to be in a room...
Another good option would be the xcase 424 ..
( since i live in europe)

I am going to buy 3 ibm 1015 or dell h310 raid cards and work them under jbod or raid 6 mode... ( 150- 180 for all of them)

I am on the search of finding a motherboard that can house those raid cards (they require PCI x 8 slot) so i need a motherboard with 3 of those slots...

( buying a 24 raid card for 800 euros is NOT an option Smile )

I have built my NAS with the sole purpose to someday go to 24 drives and with that thought I have built it with a motherboard that will go to 24 drives with 2 pci SATA cards. I think if you looked at my build it might be what you are interested in. I have zero problems with the m/b and it has been running 24/7 for over a year. Link to my build is in my signature.

My intention was never to fit a total of 24 drives in the case I am using. But to have the availability to expand to 24 drives once I was at that point. With all the 15 drives I have in now that can be replaced with 4tb drives will increase my storage but once I am out of room at 64tb will I then start looking for a new case to house 24.

When that time comes to upgrade, only things I will need are a new PSU and case and more drives. The rest will stay the same. At least that is my plan.

I was just responding to you for the use of a motherboard, which in my build will run 24 drives with the addition of the 2 SATA raid cards.

Sorry for the late reply...

I studied you build..
And now i am close in buying asrock z 87 extreme 4 motherboard..( next version of the motherboard you have bought)
Still need actually more than 24 sata . 24 for hard drives, 1 for ssd. Smile

Btw cases that can hold 24 hard drives are:
Norco 4224 not available in eu
Xcase 424 ( rm pro version is much better since it has great fans and other useful stuff )
( btw ikea's lack rack is a great addition for both of the above cases)

Lian li d8000 (which i am really close on buying)
Lian li 343b ... (But the additional costs of the 3x5 cages make it prohibited ( at least for me))
