Does RPi automatically downmix DTS to 2.0 ?
#1
Hi.

I've bought a Raspberry Pi to use it as HTPC in my daughter's playing room.

I will connect it to the TV by HDMI for video and audio (no A/V receiver).

As I don't have buy the TV set, I'm testing the RPi on my Sony KDL-46W3000 in the living-room.

As far as I know, this TV is not DTS compatible but only AC3.

So, for now, OpenELEC 3.2.4 for RPi is set up this way :

This screen is different from the one I have on my HTPC :

(the screenshot was taken from XBMC on my laptop at my office so that why XBMC did not found passthrough compatible device).

When I'm playing a DTS movie on my RPi, I get video AND AUDIO on my TV :

Does it mean that XBMC downmix the DTS stream to a stereo stream even with DTS and AC3 passhtrough options set to ON ?

I thought that RPi was not powerful enough to do this job but things have changed :

I will try this file to override EDID settings :

Sorry for my english, but, you know, I'm French so ...

The Pi reads the EDID from TV, which presumably for you says AC3 is supported and DTS is not supported.
If you enable a passthough option that is not supported, it will fall back to decode+downmix.
You can override the EDID if you believe it to be wrong
(e.g. Pi is connected to TV with HDMI. TV is connected to receiver with TOSlink. TV doesn't support DTS, but it may be possible to passthrough DTS to receiver).

However in your case overriding edid will probably result in silence or noise.

DTS decode and downmix is fine in most cases. There's been quite a lot of optimising done since the early days.

Silent or Noise is what I want because I want to bring the RPi to the shop and test it on TVs that are mentionned as DTS compatible such as Samsung UE32F5000 or LG 32LA6130.

Thanks.
