WD MyCloud or Synology 213j for NAS
#1
I'm about to start building a HTPC and I'm trying to decide on a NAS to share my media. I have around 2.5 TB of media so I would probably need 4TB to be safe for at least a year or two. I need something that interacts well with XBMC and windows since I would use my current PC to transfer media to the NAS. A WD MyCloud with a 4TB drive is around $200 and would seem to be enough for now. I was alsp thinking about the Synology 213j plus a 4TB drive for around $380. Is the WD enough or would the Synology be a better option? Or would it be overkill?

I currently have the WD mybooklive previous version.

http://www.amazon.com/Personal-Cloud-Sto...wd+my+live

My setup is win 7, 8gb ram, 12.2 frodo. I wanted to build a server but atm still learning about it so ended up getting a deal on the WD.

My ips speed is 50 down/25up. Set the mybooklive as a network drive on win 7.

Con's: really slow uploading files to the mybooklive. Around 11mb per sec. Not sure if that's normally but my net speed is great.

Pros. Xbmc plays all files. When watching through xbmc never buffers. Really good. When scraping to find new tv shows/movies takes seconds a minute.

Not sure if its better then the synology but for me its a great investment. I already filled up 2/3rd. I leave it all the time doesn't get hot or make noise.

I've connected the mybooklive with my win7, xbmc nexus 7 2nd gen, laptops. Also dlna so times.

Also setting up the device can be tricky. Customer service isn't great. Anything else just pm me.

I think I'll go with the WD. The Synology might seem better for when I get over 4 TB of media but then could just get another WD.

I checked yesterday 9to5toys.com was stating a deal on the WD.

Not sure if it's still valid but worth checking out..
