Using XMBC (ver 12.3) for the first time .

As a start, I pointed XMBC to my existing music library -- works great - can see and play everything ; l can even see the album art.

But I cannot see any of the options, for Artist, Albums, Songs etc that are shown below

All I see is Files and Add-ons

1) How do I correct this?

2) How do I create playlist's?

Okay, I gather in addition to selecting the source (which allows me to play, search, etc - thought I was done), I also need to "Scan" it into the library.

When I do this, is XMBC keeping its own separate copy of my source music files... or is it still pointing to my source media files?

If its keeping it own copy, is there a way to scan for just the changes?

Scanning your files into the library will only create a database with your metadata. There will be no additional copies of your files, it just gives you a slick and user friendly way of navigating your music (provided your file tags are all uniform).
