@zag, if your using latest Openelec Kodi 15/16, then keep an eye on your CPU usage when you have cacheindvdplayer set to false, as it strangely causes 100% cpu usage on one core - it may not happen on every channel, but it certainly does happen - Keep checking every now and then. It wasn't an issue on Openelec 5 - this is another reason why I've downgraded back to OE5 as 6 IMO is half baked.
Another thing you mention about pausing on the switch, I find its rather clunky to say the least, this is with and without cacheindvdplayer set to true/false. Look at enigma2 and all the other set top box solutions out there, when you change channel on traditional recievers it stops the stream and displays a blank screen inbetween the switch until the next channel is ready, rather than just freezing the picture and more or less glitching to the next channel as it does on Kodi.
Look how smooth the swtich is on the demo below, then compare it to Kodi.
