WIP Plugin idea: Screen uniformity (DSE) correction

Hi

As you all know, many displays suffer from screen uniformity issues, especially the ones with edge-light LEDs. If you don't know the effect, please have a look here:

So far there is no real solution to this problem and many people (like me) have to live with it Sad

So I came up with an idea and I would like to start a discussion if this problem could be solved with software (here xbmc):

Regarding the DSE (dirty screen effect - first picture in the link above) at best a per pixel correction is needed where each pixel is adjusted in brightness to match all other ones. I think this should be possible with a plugin for xbmc or am I wrong that a plugin can't modify the picture stream?

So how do you get the correction data? I have tought of two ways:

1. The easiest one: Take an uniform picture (e.g. IRE 50*) with a normal photo camera and use this as a correction image.

2. Show an IRE 50* image on the screen which is overlayn by a grid which divides it into several sections. These sections could be measured in brightness with a calibration sensor (like the X-Rite Display Pro for example). Later, these values then will be used to correct the screen. In optimum the grid is user adjustable (so someone can determine how much effort he is willing to pay to make the screen perfect)

What do you think? I am not a plugin developer, but perhaps some is interested in this idea and will bring it on the way...

Cheers,
Frank
