top choice for android box

Have apple products for xbmc. Would like to try an android box. What box should I choose? Would like one that has xbmc already loaded on it. The common problems I hate are constant buffering and slow operating system response. Is there a box that has the ability to buffer a lot more data than Apple stuff? I am a newbie.

Intel NUC is the current "best of" hardware for XBMC

Android is still a work in progress

If you want fast+preloaded I suggest you wait for Pivos to release their new android box http://www.pivosgroup.com

I found this pivos on amazon. Is this what you are talking about? Are all Pivos the same? It says xmbc capable. I have seen a "jailbroken" unit on ebay. Would I have to jail break this unit and install xbmc myself? (i am a newbie)

I looked intel nucs. Found a bunch of boxes. Have no idea what to look for. (newbie). Would like to keep my new box for around 100-150 bucks.

Thats the old Pivos unit based off Amlogic.

Basically almost all the Android boxes out there use two chipsets, Amlogic = stable video decoding but not very fast or Rockchip = faster but unstable video decoding (slowly getting better).

Pivos next unit which hopefully turns up in March I think they are saying is based off the next generation Amlogic line so it's stable but also faster with better CPU/GPU so it's closer in performance as if you were running XBMC on PC hardware.

There is no jailbreaking Android, it runs XBMC by just installing the application.

Other contenders;
Ouya = much faster hardware with Nvidia chip but runs custom Android OS fork, better option than going with one of the Rockhip based boxes, probably your best option right now.

AndroidTV devices = successor to GoogleTV official OS for set top box usage from Google, UI and apps are tailored towards TV usage and working with remotes whereas the boxes above use Android tablet OS which doesn't work out so well some of the time. A handful of AndroidTV devices where shown at CES, the Hisense Pulse Pro being the standout one. Google are also rumored to be working on their own Nexus branded AndroidTV box.

Amlogic's next gen chips imply support for AndroidTV (formally GoogleTV v4), supposedly Google is being more liberal with who can use AndroidTV OS, hopefully Pivos next box is one of these.

In terms of quality level the AndroidTV devices should be in the same league as AppleTV or thereabouts but the unofficial Android boxes that are all over the place are definitely lower quality products.

+1. Tried current Pivos (in both Android and Linux modes), the Little Black Box, etc. None are worth it, maybe just for video add-ons and such, but not for serious local/NAS media streaming, especially uncompressed 1080p. I now rely on an Intel Celeron NUC (OpenELEC) and an i3 NUC (Windows 7). Both are great.

As for the new Pivos, they're now saying best case scenario March release.

Pivos new boxes looks to have been delayed, "target estimate is now "by March" for the entry and mid level models" http://www.pivosforums.com/viewtopic.php...&start=170
