What is the recommended backend for DVB-S2?

I've tried: NextPVR: cryptic and could not really get it working
ArgusTV: cryptic and could not get it working
MediaPortal: exploded when XBMC tried to talk to it.

WMCserver: burns so much CPU 720p playback stutters on 2.2GHz dual core AMD Turion (HP N54L Microserver)

Is there any other backend for Windows that's worth a shot?

I use Argus-TV (albeit with DVB-T2), and can't fault it.

Yes, it takes a little while to figure out how to set it up (just follow the guides on the wiki), but now that it's set up, it's all working beautifully for me Smile

Argus drove me insane at installation already. Cryptic errors, then MySQL for sodding EPG data, I mean, come on.

I managed to get WMCserver working in the end, turned out Gotham-nightly has a fix for a weird mutation in european sat tv streams.

I use mediaportal for the tv server on a different pc on my network. It works well in xbmc and I also have it setup to stream live tv even outside my network to all devices.
