To be honest, this:
Foxconn R50-i4100 Intel Atom D2700 (2.13GHz, dual core) Intel NM10 Intel HD Graphics 1 x HDMI Barebone
along with a low profile Graphics card is all you will ever need. Form factor is a little big; but it fits nicely hidden behind a 50" HDTV...
Consider CPU is very cheap these days, I would stay away from Atom especially for 3d and dts-ma....

True!
..but when I bought mine, there was an AMD E-350 APU (1.6GHz, Dual-Core) AMD A45 (Hudson D1) option available. I can't see that item anymore...

Out of the box? Iffy. But with a dedicated, Low Profile (the case is not tipical hight for add-on cards) Graphic Card you will be ok. As noted bellow, the model I bought used an AMD E-350 APU (1.6GHz, Dual-Core) AMD A45 (Hudson D1) instead of Intel Atom...

Why suggest an ancient cpu + graphics card when he can get a chip with integrated graphics

LOL! It was not ancient 3 years ago :-)
I've tried other barebone systems APU (CPU+GPU) over the years and (maybe because I was using powerline instead of gigabit ethernet), they had a bit of trouble keeping up with high bitrate media and uncompressed BluRay. But given you apropos observation, that was 3 years ago and today APUs may have caught up...

See below build, what do you guys think? Little over my budget, but I really like it. I'm sure this should be able to run XMBC very smooth, incl. 3D etc right?

Maybe one could consider my thoughts on this? http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1559638

I wouldn't buy an old Atom setup at this moment.

You'll enjoy the performance of your Intel i3-4330. It included a good (HD4600) iGPU for Blu-ray 3d movie. Here are your specs- Intel® HD Graphics P4600 Boosts Performance: Guide and Graphics Intel® InTru™ 3D Technology FAQ ....

Maybe is just me; but on the Size vs Power, when it comes to HTPCs at some point, I skew towards size...

Any other inputs regarding the build? Thanks for the links, i'm reading about it right now. seems like the 4600 graphics chip is pretty good!
