Asus Chromebox announcement
#16
looks like a nice box. Appears only the celeron and i3 model will be available in the US according to the article. Also, I'm a little leary of the google OS. Hopefully the hard drive can be replaced and windows is an option.

Was more hoping for OpenELEC Smile

Why the hell would I want a dongle hanging off the front of it? That won't even switch it on from powered off! Why don't you click the links in my sig below and see where i stuck that dongle mate! Then you might realise how stupid Asus are for not putting one in! Wink

Who cares about IR? After using FLIRC I wouldn't dream of using anything else again. Besides, the HTPC will most likely be on 24/7 considering the low power consumption - plus my sitting room isn't so big that it will take me very long to go and turn the HTPC off/on.

FLIRC. Another ugly ass dongle hanging off the front of it.

You can leave yours on mate. I like to switch mine off. All my AV kit is hidden away in another part of the house. I use universal remotes and IR blasters. See, we're all different!

True, but the Flirc is actually behind the box and works just fine even if it doesn't have direct line of sight. Another option is CEC too.

Im completly fine with a small usb dongle on the front of a htcp. I dont need to go to Rivendell and hire a elf to alchemically bond my ir receiver to the usb port, Cool story though

This little back and forth makes me wonder why CEC isn't used more often as a remote solution? Seems to me like it's the cleanest solution (possibly simplest) as well.

+1 for an HTPC-elf to perform maintenance on the hardware for me.

The only problem I encountered is customizing the buttons. Flirc is a small USB dongle that emulates keyboard commands, so there's quite a lot of customization you can do - no software is needed once it's programmed.

CEC requires a compatible HDTV.

Android remote, there no elf or dongle.

If only they could make a good bluetooth+IR remote based on BT 4.0

For a chromebox? A cheap chromebox? See, the thing is I don't care if you don't want to use the thing, but you came into the thread and made a shit post about not wanting the thing. Why bother posting if it's just going to be a shit post? The world does not revolve around you.

Hell Yeah! intel haswell i3 nad 2 gig ram, I had a c2d with 1 gig ram that easily played 1080p

I'm mostly thinking about the Celeron version. If it will play back smoothly in software (hi10p h.264 1080p30), then I'd rather go with that.

idk about hi10p. i just got a N2820 (Celeron 2.4GHz dual-core) and it struggles with 1080p hi10p w/ FLAC audio. anything non-hi10p is fine including 1080p ~20Mbps dts5.1. still better than my old zotac id11.
