For all you Synology owners suffering stuttering/buffering

Hi All,

I love my Synology. Fabulous piece of kit...but unfortunately I've been experiencing stuttering and buffering with it and my ATV2 running Gotham. A number of tweaks had lead me to believe the problem was resolved, only for it to come back a few days or even a week later. I kept putting it down to the SKY Router or my switch.

To cut a long and boring story short. I upgraded NAS RAM, upgraded to CAT6A cables, moved the NAS literally next to the ATV2, changed skin and nothing worked permanently.

I had set up the Synology for link aggregation thinking that would improve throughout (I didn't get an error when I set it up). Unfortunately I didn't realise my switch was compatible with just about every 802.3 except for 802.3ad.

I talked to Synology today and they pointed out my mistake. After turning link aggregation off and just running with two un-bonded connections I don't get any stuttering or buffering at all. In fact my ATV2 now is incredibly responsive - instantly playing, pausing, fast forwarding just like a BR player Big Grin

I hope that helps someone. Here is the email from Synology....

From my analysis of the debug logs I have noted that you are currently running your NIC's in a bond and you have enabled Jumbo frames.

Jumbo Frames is an advanced networking option that should only be enabled if the network architecture has been configured to work them specifically. If Jumbo Frames are enabled and your other client machines, routers, switches etc. do not use them, you will most likely experience a loss in performance.

Synology provide two different methods of setting up bonded networks. One will allow you to set up a failover procedure on your Synology in the event that one NIC is unable to communicate with the network properly. This type of bond can work with most network configurations and hardware.

The other will set up a bond that will increase the maximum total bandwidth of traffic that can be sent to and from the Synology. This type of bond requires use of a specialist switch and/or hardware that supports the IEEE 802.3ad network specification. If you are not using a switch that supports this specification then you will experience slower performance.

Both of these configuration options being used in the incorrect environment are likely to cause packet loss when using the Synology and will explain the degraded performance you are experiencing at the moment when streaming media.
