Now that's it gone through a cleanup I'd like to know the max number of items it can contain.

And also why (now that it can have an automatic height) it wont centrally align it using <centertop>50%</centertop>?

PVR items have a whole bunch - about 12 last time I looked.

The <centertop> stuff just sets the initial position - it doesn't change as the height changes. i.e. the positions aren't dynamic.

So it gets set before XBMC knows how high to make the grouplist?

Yes, exactly. It'll be using the height defined in the XML.
