USB IR remote problems
#1
Hi - I have a simple USB plug n play IR remote attached to my Pi but for some reason at boot up RaspBMC/XBMC doesn't recognise the remote so I have no control - so with the system up I have to disconnect/reconnect the USB IR device and then it works OK. Thinking the USB IR device was faulty I got it replaced with a new one but I still have the same problem. It never used to be like this until recently I had to rebuild RaspBMC as my SD card seemingly became corrupt - this rebuild introduced the problem. I could leave the Pi on all the time I suppose but I have a USB connected HDD and this carries on spinning when the Pi is on so will use loads of power when not in use - the only way to sleep the HDD is to shut the Pi down - not sure if a running Pi / XBMC system would be happy for me to just power off the HDD without a proper USB dismount (a la Windows). I am running the XBMC v13 nightly from 5th May 14 and all other aspects of the Pi/XBMC are fine.
I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this? Many thanks!

I had the exact same issue, but never managed to resolve it. I think the cec integration caused the issue. You could try disabling it in xbmc settings. This didn't work for me so I switched to a gpio connected IR receiver, which was really cheap and works flawlessly. Plus you free up a USB port. There is a really good guide here:

I bought the following from eBay

GPIO leads

Hi Bigdave - thanks for the reply. I already have CEC disabled so it isn't that. I will certainly look at the alternate method you highlight - thanks for the steer.
