Applying the margro build is a good idea. Keep in mind, we have extra overhead that wmc does not have, so the best we can hope for is to be almost as fast as wmc, in my experience the margro build gets us very close - but it does depend on setup - mostly on the tuners. Serverwmc plays nice with wmc though, so your dad can continue to use wmc if that's what he wants.

I wonder if it would be possible to get a margro build for android?

It took me a bit of time to setup an Ubuntu VM and get it all working so that I can cross compile our pvr.wmc addon for android arm devices. If you, or someone else, have some technical ability and basic Linux knowledge you could attempt the same. Obviously instead of the XBMC git repo you would pull the code from margro's repo including his hotfix, instead.

The android readme in the XBMC github is most of the way there, and here were some notes/commentary I had on what I did to eventually get it working

Thanks scarecrow420. If I somehow find the time, I'll consider it.
