The OpenElec guys were kind enough to include eSpeak in support of this addon because OpenElec doesn't have a way to install new software packages.

On a Debian based installation, you need to install the speech engine yourself so

in a terminal for example.

I am going to stay with openelec then.
keep me posted on how it comes, because I really like this Haddon a lot.
I helps me use open elec a lot easier.
How come some of the items in the settings are not spoken like some the descriptions of the setting for koi?

I am unable to access all the text when browsing the settings, but perhaps in the future I will find some workaround. Also, there is still more work to be done in the addon, so there may be portions of Kodi without speech or where speech is incomplete.

do you still need the repo to install it or is it on the koi repo now?

Means it is now in the official Repo, No longer need to load a 3rd party Repo.

To install goto,
All Addons - Services - Kodi Screen Reader

Of course if you wish to use NVDA you need to load the NVDA Controller Client DLL and for that you still need to add Ruuk's repo. This only applies if you use windows and wish to use NVDA as your speech engine for Kodi.

Hi everyone,
I'm on Mac, blind and can't go through the menus to install the addon because it won't talk until it's installed.
Therefore, how do I install it manually? When I used this addon last year, I download the repo, and the addon, extracted them both and then put both folders in `/library/application support/Kodi/Kodi Addons.
When I do that now, however, Kodi opens with an audible tone, followed by a beep and that's it, no speech. I read in the changelog that I'm supposed to hear three beeps now?
Is there a step I'm missing, or do I just have to do it via the as of right now inaccessible addons manager because the addon isn't installed yet?

It should be .../Kodi/addons if that's not what you meant. Is OSX the same version as you last used it on? The addon works on OSX for me in a virtual machine, but I don't own a Mac and can't test more recent versions of OSX.

Hi there,
I am now using OS X Yosemite. I can confirm that the addon is loading--I tried both the master and regular versions, both of which has a different audible tone on startup. When I move through the menus, however, no speech. I can confirm that speech itself works as I have used it with Renpy and various other apps which use the system voice and not VoiceOver.
When you install apps via the addon manager, does it go through the same process? I'm doing the same thing manually when it installs an addon?
I can try it the traditional way by going through the menus to see if that helps, but I wish this method would work.
Thanks for the help though, hopefully this can be resolved.
Update: I asked someone to help me go through the menus and install it the traditional way via the add ons manager. Once I clicked install, I heard the beep associated with the Haddon loading, but no speech. I guess I was installing it correctly then. But, why not speech...?

From what little I read of this info, the XBMC.service.TTS is just autostopping and closing on startup...
Edit: Holy crap, a lot of Python errors concerning the speech engine backends and things. I have Cepstral Tom as the default voice, but something similar happens with OS X Alex, so. Lots of debugging to do on the Mac side, I suppose.

Orinks: The issue you are having appears to be caused by the fact that you have Cepstral installed, and the addon is attempting to use it and failing. I've never tried Cepstral on OSX so it is not surprising it does not work. I've modifed the addon so that it uses the system voice by default. Let me know if this gets it working for you.

Everyone else: I've change the backend priorities so that the built-in or most likely to work are the highest. This may mean that upon installation, if you've never selected a specific backend, the backend that is used will change. To fix this you just need to select a the desired backend in the addon settings.

Hi,
Just installed the screenreader and all is working well. I'm asking this basic question here because I'm not ware of any documentation or FAQs. Is there a keyboard shortcut available to temporarily enable/disable the screen reader?
