best remote control
#1
Hi,

I am currently setting up my first htpc and the information in these forums has been amazing help. it's going to have a twin satellite tuner so I'm going to watch, record, pause TV etc.. Along with streaming of course.

I am planning to have xbmc as my front end and wmc as my back end software. Can anyone recommend a good remote control that I can use to navigate xbmc that I can also use for live TV??

Or an I best having a separate remote for xbmc and using the remote that comes with the tuner card for briefing TV?

Thanks for your help

unless im misunderstanding you, you would be using XBMC to view live tv (using ServerWMC and WMC as backend) therefore all remote controlling will be done in XBMC. Any RC6 compatible MCE remote will be fine, so potentially the one that comes with your tuner, or a different one you get off ebay or elsewhere... But you can also get smart/all in one remotes like URC, Logitech Harmony and others, that can be programmed to send commands to multiple devices, including RC6/MCE remote (for controlling XBMC/HTPC) but also your TV, receiver, ait conditioner, any other devices etc.

Thanks for the advice scarecrow.

I'm still waiting on my tuner card to arrive so I will try the remote that comes with that first and take it from there.

I am wanting the live TV + PVR function to be as user friendly as possible. Is the xbmc - wmc setup you mentioned best for this?

Depends who your user is I guess

To be honest I think that PVR in XBMC in general (regardless of backend) still has a long way to come from an interface point of view, but the simple fact it allows centralised live viewing and shared recordings between a number of remote clients is good enough to warrant using it in my particular case. I probably wouldn't set my parents up with it though...

Best bet is to try it yourself :-)

I use a Logitech Harmony One. Its amazing. I bought it from a repair shop on eBay for harmony remotes and it works like a charm. I also paired it with FLIRC. Nothing can beat this setup.

I also highly recommend harmony remotes. My favorite is the 880 (now obsolete, but still available on ebay).

Any thoughts on the best non-IR remote option? I'm using a Pi with OpenElec and CEC, but wanted a more full featured remote. The Pi isn't in IR range. Thanks.
