my system goes directly into xbmc instead of opening under mint. Any help??

Damn, many people struggle for ages to acheive this!
What happens when you exit XBMC? Do you get a login window?

The better question is: Which howto did you copy / paste without understanding what it does? :-)
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.
