Current guide for XBMC setup with Media Portal TV Server
#1
I have recently setup Media Portal TV Server and am using Media Portal as the front-end - both client and server are on the same HTPC (with DVB-S2 and DVB-T tuners picking up UK freesat and Irish digital terrestial, I'm based in Dublin). I'm finding Media Portal is great to use but I keep hearing folks say XBMC is even better so I want to see what I'm missing out on.

First question is do I need to uninstall or disable the Media Portal client before starting with XBMC or can they co-exist?

I have looked around and found pages like the following that give overviews of how to setup XBMC to work with Media Portal TV Server but they seem quite old so before I get stuck into it and go down the wrong path, I wanted to ask if there is a definitive guide that has the latest steps to take for setting this up?

Is there any EPG setup required on the XBMC side or can it just leverage both TV signal and EPG content directly from Media Portal TV Server? I have Media Portal TV Server setup to use XMLTV GUI (run daily via a scheduled task) so if I could avoid having to go through setting that up again that would be ideal.

Thanks!

I used this guide to set it up in XBMC, and use the Sky EPG plugin.

Thanks, but scanning through it, it looks like that guide is about how to setup Media Portal and is by a guy who went from XBMC to Media Portal. I already have Media Portal TV setup and would like to find out the best way to set it up with XBMC (e.g. to avoid tuner conflicts etc.).

True, but it explains setting up SKY epg on mediaportal backend. Setting up the front end is just installing an addon... they will co-exist fine.

Just wanted to circle back here to say thanks for the link. I got this setup and running in only a few minutes, delighted with how easy it was. Great that XBMC can co-exist with Media Portal and not conflict. I'll now get into testing it all properly but all looks to be working so far.

Only niggle is some channels I added to a group in Media Portal TV Server are not showing in that group in the EPG in XBMC even after trying to add them via the Group Management setting option in XBMC. Will investigate that and also getting channel logos displayed, other than those minor points, all is well and not much time was taken.

Set up a folder and download a channel icons pack. (google mediaportal channel icons) You have to name them exactly as your channels are named for them to link up once you've pointed XBMC at the icons folder.

The only issue I'm having now is scheduled recordings seem to be ending way early... like a 45 min show seems to record for only 30 mins. The time on the server appears correct so not sure why its stopping early.
