Hi I hope someone can help

I have a macbook pro 2010 with the latest yosemite os x installed connected to a onkyo avr through a display port to hdmi adapter then on to a 40 inch full HD sony lcd.

xmbc works fine on my laptop but i can not get it to go full screen when i connect it to my tv. I cant even get just my background display to fill the tv screen.

Please help.

Get the latter sorted and it will work on XBMC aswell. You should ensure that you are working in extended mode. Meaning that you extend your screen to the TV instead of mirroring its content. Then you can select a different resolution for the TV and XBMC should be able to go fullscreen there.
