OS X Streaming from iMac
#1
Hi,

I currently have a iMac 2009 being left on all the time with XBMC and downloading video in the background. I am moving house and this will sit in my bedroom. I am looking to get a small box to run XBMC in my living room that will read the library and stream downloaded files from my mac over wifi. So essentially it would be a front end.

What would be the best and cheapest way to achieve this? Preferably I would also like to have netflix on it.

As a side note, I would pay a bit extra for more reliability!

Thanks!

I bought a used MacMini from ebay for my setup. Probably depends on exactly how much flexibility you want since this is a slightly more expensive option. If you're a Windows fan you could go with a nuc. There's a fairly wide range available.

I know it's probably not an option, but you should go with an ethernet connection if possible. You'll probably see better performance that way.

All these will work. They are in order of Price, most expensive last and are extensively supported here on the forum.

1. Raspberry Pi B+ (Overclocked to get the best out of it - runs well once you push it, and have a proper power supply. No Netflix)
2. Amazon Fire TV (comes with a remote and can play Netflix, Hulu etc as well. Very couch friendly)
3. Chromebox (perfect video playback with powerful Intel HD Graphics, Netflix available but you have to dual boot with a wired Keyboard)
